Choosing the Right Foundation Shade: Undertones & Skin Tones Explained!

First things first, and I see this all the time working in the makeup industry... people just don't know what colour their skin is! It's easy to identify if a foundation is too dark or light, but choosing the right undertone is another story.

Remember: Undertones have nothing to do with the actual colour or saturation of how sun kissed or fair you are. Instead, it's about the varying levels of pink, apricot, red, yellow, green and dark hues beneath your surface skin tone.

  • If your skin veers pink, red, or blueish, you have cool undertones.

  • If your skin has a yellow, peachy, or golden tinge, you have warm undertones.

  • If you have a mix of both, your undertone is neutral.

Choosing the wrong shade can be tragic and is usually the reason why a lot of people may look 'orange' or 'washed out'. If you are still unsure I recommend having your shade matched in a makeup store but always make sure you check your makeup in natural lighting before committing to a purchase.

You can even find your shade online! Fenty Beauty have a quiz that you can take to find your perfect shade... Click here to find your shade!
